Winter Vacation Ideas From Redding

Skip the Sierra resorts this winter, with their packed parking lots and long lines, and go where the only limits to your snow play are the daylight hours and the quality of your gloves. Redding is the best base camp for winter recreation, offering snow fun in every direction but south. (And going south in the winter is for the birds, anyway!)

"Think snow!" has been the rally cry at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park for years, and boy has it paid off! The park has 425 acres of skiable terrain (20% beginner, 55% intermediate, 25% advanced) 32 trails, 3 triple chairs, and 2 moving carpet lifts. Rentals, grub, and lessons are also available, and watch their event calendar for fun extras.

Lassen Volcanic National Park makes walking on water easy with ranger-led snowshoe tours every Saturday and Sunday from January through April. The rangers will even rent you their extra snowshoes for a whole $1, teach you how to walk in them, and take you on a stroll through Lassen's beautiful, snow-blanketed southern corner. Learn about winter ecology in far northern California's volcanic landscape as you discover what will surely be your new favorite hobby.  Of course, if you're already pretty steady on snowshoes, you can skip the tour and explore on your own. Bring your own shoes or rent some in Redding. Lassen has several great snowshoeing trails throughout the park, and the park is close enough to Redding that you can do a half day excursion, or go for the whole day and pack your sled, cocoa, and snowman-making-kit.

Enjoy Northern California snowmobiling at its best! Hundreds of miles of groomed trails, thousands of acres of valleys, vistas, volcanoes and more. All nestled around the winter wonderland that is Mt Shasta in Northern California in the Klamath, Modoc and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. Rent on-site or off, just stay dry!
