At 14,161 feet, snow-capped Mt. Shasta dominates the northern skies as you journey through the region. It is the second highest peak in the Cascade mountain range and the fifth highest mountain in California. Mt. Shasta is an active volcano--the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc--and is said to erupt every 600 years. Many climbers attempt the summit of Mt. Shasta with the summer climbing season running from late April to October, but the mountain is also popular for religious rituals and gatherings. Many believe that sentient or spiritual beings--Lemurians--which are superior to humans, live inside the mountain. During the winter, recreation enthusiasts can enjoy alpine skiing at the Mt. Shasta Board & Ski Park which features two triple chair lifts and a surface tow. More than 300 miles of groomed trails offer cross-country skiers and snowmobilers a great way to explore the terrain.
